BCUSU is looking for a proactive and empathetic Student Advisor to join our Advice Team and play a key role in supporting and advocating for students throughout their academic journey.
This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about student welfare and can provide high-quality, specialist advice across a range of complex issues.
As a Student Advisor, you will deliver personalised one-to-one support to students, particularly in areas such as academic appeals, complaints, disciplinary procedures, fitness to practise concerns, and housing issues. You will also support students during formal university processes, including attending meetings and hearings as their advocate or support person.
You will act as a central point of contact for students navigating university policies, procedures, and services including mental health support, academic assistance, and financial aid. Building trusting relationships with students is at the heart of this role, helping them feel heard, respected, and empowered.
Key responsibilities:

Provide accurate and up-to-date advice on complex academic and housing issues.

Advocate on behalf of students where necessary, ensuring their voices are represented and their rights protected.

Conduct detailed casework, including interviewing students, identifying issues, and offering appropriate solutions and support.

Interpret and communicate complex policies, procedures, and regulations clearly and empathetically.

Manage your own caseload, prioritising effectively based on urgency and student needs.

Maintain a strong knowledge of legislation, university policies, and best practices relevant to student support and advice.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and offer reassurance in sensitive situations

Experience working with people from all backgrounds

Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines

Advanced knowledge in key advisory areas (appeals, complaints, disciplinaries, housing, etc.) and current legislation and policy
- Experience in casework, advocacy, or a student support setting
Hours
Full time, 35 hours per week
Salary
£28,318 - £30,768
