Protect student members when engaging with societies online via Discord, Facebook & other social media platforms

    Rejected
I propose to introduce training, tools and support to be bought in across all discord servers, Facebook groups and other group chats to verify as far as possible their Student status, to protect ourselves from bot spam, pornographic content, or other malicious content, and to allow the BCU support and report tool to still be used effectively in incidents that take place online in society areas. To do so, I have proposals for the following: Society Discords should implement the BCU Verify Bot, created by CEBE student Edward Bullas, to allow them to easily verify their student status, prior to being able to engage with sharing photos videos or links in text channels, or be able to join open audio channels. 2) Committee should maintain their Facebook group membership, and ensure members provide student ID upon requesting access, to protect student members on Facebook. 3) For those using WhatsApp, they should not freely display the WhatsApp link online, but instead share it via Student email to ensure only verified members are able to access other students phone numbers or send malicious content. 4) Further training should be offered to society committees to help implement and embed further online safety for those engaging with their societies.

4:02pm on 21 Feb 22 This idea has been rejected as policy, but will be picked up by the Students' Union team as a project moving forwards, considering the platform is used by a large number of our students.

    How it works

    Submit

Submit an idea... anything that could improve student experience is a valid idea.

    • You must be a BCU student, logged in using your student account
    • You can choose to submit anonymously, so your name won’t be displayed.
BCUSU staff will still be able to see your name and email to contact you

    Discuss

You will be contacted by one of the Activities and Representation Coordinators to discuss your idea and make any relevant changes to it.

    Vote

Your idea then goes live, here on the Ideas Board for other students to vote and comment.

    It will be live until:

    • it reaches 25 positive votes
or until the end of the academic year (whichever comes first)
    • Students can vote with a thumbs up (agree) or thumbs down (disagree)
    • Votes and comments will help the Executive Officer team make decisions

    Action

If your idea reaches the 25-positive vote threshold:

    • it will be handed over to the Executive Officer team for review
    • they will discuss the idea and decide what action to take
    • the comments section will be updated with the agreed upon actions

If an idea is raised to hold an Executive Officer to account, and it gains 25 positive votes, it will be reviewed at Scrutiny Group.
