BCUSU spent over £20k on our membership of the NUS last year. That is a truly extortionate to pay to an organisation that does not offer value for money. That money could be better spent internally. That would be over £20k a year EXTRA in the SU budget that would go straight into SU services to better improve student life at BCU.

4:08pm on 31 Mar 22 Hi! Just wondering if there is an update on this from the Officer team for consideration? As this was 3 months ago, and the officers have still gone ahead with an NUS strike, and going to the NUS conference, whilst clearly not responding to this idea!

4:16pm on 31 Mar 22 Hello! I'm also really curious as to whether or not this has been brought forward yet. Since this vote has passed the Executive officers have further developed their relationship with NUS, further suggesting the urgency of addressing this extremely urgent issue is not at the forefront of their concern. As their terms are coming to an end soon (and as some will not be returning) - I find that it is more important than ever to resolve this issue to avoid this becoming it being swept under the rug.

4:27pm on 31 Mar 22 Thanks Luke and Polly! Absolutely agree with all the points you’ve made. I’ve heard nothing about this from the team and an update is very much overdue.

1:25pm on 7 Apr 22 Apologies for not updating quicker on this idea it has been discussed by the officer team but a final decision is pending further discussion with the idea holder.

5:37pm on 7 Apr 22 Hi all, To keep you all updated on where we are with this idea; the idea has been brought forward to the Executive Officer Committee to be decided upon however after discussing it further we felt there was a need for clarity on what Neavan, the idea holder, would want if this idea was to pass. I have met with Neavan (on 7th April) to share materials that showcase the impact of NUS and it's value to the organisation of BCUSU as well as requesting further clarity from Neavan on this idea. We have also discussed the next steps, offering opportunity to meet with me for support during this process. Once I have received a clarity paragraph from Neavan, the Executive Officers will make a final decision based on the additional information provided by the idea holder and the current understanding of the impact of NUS and NUS Charity. Once the decision has been made in the Executive Officer Committee, Sophie Reynolds will then update here on the decision made. As we are currently affiliated with NUS, as an organisation we will continue to utilise the range of services and opportunities offered to us by NUS, including attending NUS National Conference, NUS Liberation Conference and NUS Strategic Conference. We are also part of a Midlands Working Group, sit on the NUS Freedom of Speech Working Group and utilise resources such as the Divest to Decolonise Toolkit, created for Student Union's to use when creating campaigns on Decolonising our Universities. Thank you all for taking the time to read this update. Stay safe. Your Union President, Victoria.

11:55am on 3 May 22 This idea has been rejected by the officers they felt that NUS is useful/beneficial for the students' Union, providing a lot of resources. If anyone still has questions please contact Victoria your President for more on this. Union.president@bcu.ac.uk

    How it works

    Submit

Submit an idea... anything that could improve student experience is a valid idea.

    • You must be a BCU student, logged in using your student account
    • You can choose to submit anonymously, so your name won’t be displayed.
BCUSU staff will still be able to see your name and email to contact you

    Discuss

You will be contacted by one of the Activities and Representation Coordinators to discuss your idea and make any relevant changes to it.

    Vote

Your idea then goes live, here on the Ideas Board for other students to vote and comment.

    It will be live until:

    • it reaches 25 positive votes
or until the end of the academic year (whichever comes first)
    • Students can vote with a thumbs up (agree) or thumbs down (disagree)
    • Votes and comments will help the Executive Officer team make decisions

    Action

If your idea reaches the 25-positive vote threshold:

    • it will be handed over to the Executive Officer team for review
    • they will discuss the idea and decide what action to take
    • the comments section will be updated with the agreed upon actions

If an idea is raised to hold an Executive Officer to account, and it gains 25 positive votes, it will be reviewed at Scrutiny Group.
