Make the Eagle and Ball more accessible

As it currently stands, the Eagle and Ball pub has a few measures to ensure accessibility: a lift to the upstairs, fairly level surfaces with minimal major level changes, the ability to set music levels in individual rooms, etc. There are, however, a small number of major issues in the accessibility which should be easily rectified. Firstly, the loft room isn't accessible to anyone who uses a wheelchair or mobility aid due to the couple of steps up to it - even through the route where the lift is. The stairs from the lift to the loft room could be replaced permanently with a ramp, or alternately a portable ramp could be purchased and stored in any one of a number of places until the inevitable occasion it's needed. Secondly, there are some doors which aren't easy to open or are simply awkward to get through for able-bodied people, which would be amplified by people who have mobility difficulties. The front doors don't seem easy to get through in a wheelchair and the upstairs door from the lift area into the main area in the pub is difficult to pull open, not least when it has to be held open by a wheelchair user who then has to use their arms to wheel through. A simple resolution to this could be a 'Press for assistance' doorbell on the front door to call for one of the friendly staff to hold the front doors open, followed by 'Do you need help opening the door upstairs? It's heavy.' These small changes can make a big impact on people's lives and seem like a no-brainer to implement, making this beautiful pub an even more practical space.

How it works

Submit an idea... anything that could improve student experience is a valid idea.

  • You must be a BCU student, logged in using your student account
  • You can choose to submit anonymously, so your name won’t be displayed.
BCUSU staff will still be able to see your name and email to contact you

You will be contacted by one of the Activities and Representation Coordinators to discuss your idea and make any relevant changes to it.

Your idea then goes live, here on the Ideas Board for other students to vote and comment.

It will be live until:

  • it reaches 25 positive votes
or until the end of the academic year (whichever comes first)
  • Students can vote with a thumbs up (agree) or thumbs down (disagree)
  • Votes and comments will help the Executive Officer team make decisions

If your idea reaches the 25-positive vote threshold:

  • it will be handed over to the Executive Officer team for review
  • they will discuss the idea and decide what action to take
  • the comments section will be updated with the agreed upon actions

If an idea is raised to hold an Executive Officer to account, and it gains 25 positive votes, it will be reviewed at Scrutiny Group.
