From 15th May, West Midlands Police (WMP) officers will be intensifying efforts to reduce knife crime and get weapons off the streets
You might see more officers in local parks and public spaces doing knife sweeps and talking to local businesses about knife purchasing as they try to help keep the public safe and raise awareness around youth violence.
Did you know? In 2021/22, there were around 45,000 offences involving a knife or sharp instrument in England and Wales.
Here’s how you can help reduce knife crime in your area:
-
If you see something suspicious or know of any gang activity, get in touch with WMP. You can also report it anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting their website.
-
Talk to your child or young people you know about the dangers of carrying a knife. Carrying a knife for protection is not a valid reason for the police. It actually means you’re 51 per cent more likely to have it used against you. Visit #LifeOrKnife for more information.
- Dispose of old knives correctly. Wrap them in puncture-proof plastic or cardboard. You can hand them in to your local police station, place them in a weapon surrender bin, or even pop them in your refuse bin wrapped securely and labelled ‘Caution: Sharp’. You can find your nearest weapon surrender bin here.
- Learn more about knife crime and the laws around carrying a weapon. WMP have created a dedicated educational space for their #LifeOrKnife campaign, where you can learn more.
Follow your local police social media accounts to keep up to date with the latest advice and information.
Remember in an emergency, call 999. All non-urgent crime can be reported via the WMP website or by calling 101.
