A brief history of LGBT+ History in the UK

1969 - 50+ years ago...

Following the Stonewall Riots in New York, June 1969, the Gay Liberation Front was founded to combat the mainstream institutions of the UK and the oppression that the Community faced from the police. This group worked in solidarity with other oppressed groups to organise the first Pride March in 1972.

Since the initial pride march, the age of homosexual consent has been equalized, section 28 of the Local Government Act has been revoked, implementation of the Civil Partnership Act (2004) followed by the Marriage Act (2013), implementation of the Gender Recognition act (2004), and the Equality Act (2010).

The campaign continues for equality, acceptance, and legal reform!

1973

The Campaign for Homosexual Equality holds the first British gay rights conference in Morecambe, Lancashire. Brighton's first Pride takes place, organised by the Sussex Gay Liberation Front.

2003 - 20 years ago...

Section 28 is repealed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, lifting the ban on local authorities from ‘the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality’.

Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations becomes law in the UK, making it illegal to discriminate against lesbians, gay and bi people in the workplace.

Stonewall Cymru is founded.

Celia Kitzinger and Sue Wilkinson, both British university professors, legally marry in Canada. On their return, their same-sex marriage is not recognised under British law.

2013 - 10 Years ago...

Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act is passed in England and Wales.

Stonewall’s ‘Gay. Let’s get the meaning straight’ campaign launches in schools to address the widespread use of homophobic language.

The first Trans Pride event takes place in Brighton.

2023 - Today...

It’s been nearly five years since the UK Government first promised to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’.

“We breathed a sigh of relief in 2018 when we were told a [conversion therapy] ban was imminent but there has been nothing substantive from the government since then – only empty promises. We will not let up until we see the details and timetable of the new law and it passes both houses of parliament. The ban must protect trans people, children and adults, and apply to religious practices. It is time to stop dithering and get this done.”

Peter Tatchell, LGBT+ human rights campaigner and founder of the StopDithering.com campaign.
