"My name is Karen Stopford. I’m 56 years old and joined the prison Service when I was 40 and I wished that I had joined when I was a lot younger. When I joined you sat a maths and English test, then did your fitness and then completed four JSAC scenarios with real actors, watched by Prison Managers. Qualifications I have 7 average O levels and 2 average A levels and a lot of life experience in lots of jobs all with people, ie bar work, hotel work, shop work, tax office.
I was a Prison Officer for 6 years then got offered temp Senior Officer running a residential unit, I did this on and off for 4 years and then was offered a Custodial Manager role, this was after I had to pass another JSAC which was sit in a room and be Oscar One which is the role of a manager running a jail with a telephone on the desk and a Officer walked in and had an issue that you have to deal with, then the phone rings and another problem somewhere else in the jail and then another phone call and another person comes in. and the last 6 years as a custodial manager."
