LUKE MCCOMBE

Not even heart surgery is stopping me from bringing change!

Why do you want to run for this position?

In my four years as a BCU student, like most students I have talked to, I have found there is not enough support for people from all walks of life at this university, in areas such as access to learning, personal tutoring, and timetabling. I want your views on these issues to matter, and be heard by those with power. I know these issues can be fixed, and with my previous experience in similar positions and my belief in change, I feel that I am the one to fill this role.

What would your priorities be if you were elected?

Firstly, I will push for the recording of lectures. As someone currently missing teaching due to open-heart surgery, I know the relief this would bring.

Secondly, I will improve the personal tutoring system. Currently, some students do not know who their tutor is, or how to access their help to the fullest.

Thirdly, I will work to clarify the timetabling system, giving students a simple way to know when and where their classes are taking place.

Finally, I will ensure that your opinions on academic issues are taken more seriously, and fed back to those who can make change.

What skills and experience do you have that would make you a good Officer?

I have been a Scrutiny Group member for BCUSU officers for two years, reviewing their actions to ensure that change does occur. It has shown me the work that Officers must deliver, and how this can be achieved.

I have also served as Student Representative for two years for the Psychology department, as well as the Lead Course Representative for Level 5, giving me first-hand experience working with lecturers to make academic change, and improve modules to be fairer and accessible.

I am also a Committee Member of three societies, where I have assisted students with academic and non-academic issues.
