What makes a good idea?

Idea Appropriate (yes/no) Reason
Changes to the process for applying for the Financial Assistance Fund ✔️ Would require working with the relevant team to streamline a University process. Or could involve implementing a new process which may be a long-term project that required investment and resources
More breaks in engineering lab sessions ❌ This is a course specific idea, which would be best resolved by contacting your Course Rep, who would then add it to the Feedback Hub
Request to have a counsellor with specific remits in University’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Team (such as a Grief counsellor) ✔️ Isn’t something which BCUSU have control over, as the team is managed by the University. This idea getting 930 votes would give our Officer Team a strong argument to give to the University for extra funding for this type of role
Requesting to rearrange their individual timetable ❌ This is a student’s individual academic issue, which would be handled by BCU's Student Support Centre. Our Advice Team could support if they’re struggling with handling the issue
Calling for more social spaces on campus ✔️ This is something that would require involvement from multiple areas across the University and funding. The University may require a high student backing (+930 votes) to invest in a project like this

Review use of Turnitin following AI concerns

    Current
    • Assessments
I’d like to review BCUs use of Turnitin following concerns student’s work may be used to train AI models. This is being done without the consent of students who have worked incredibly hard on their submissions, stealing their work with no real mechanism for them to object.
Vice President Education
11:31am on 29 Sep 26 Thank you for raising this concern. I want to reassure students that this issue has already been raised with the University and is being actively considered. To clarify, the use of student submissions to train AI models was part of a proposed change to Turnitin's End User Agreement. However, Turnitin did not proceed with that change, so this is not currently the case for BCU students and no changes have been made that would allow this use of student work. That said, given the concerns raised and the possibility of future changes, we are already looking into the matter. At BCU, Turnitin is currently used for similarity checking only. The AI detection tool is not switched on and is not in use. I have raised the wider concerns around Turnitin with the Dean of Students and the Pro Vice Chancellor Education & Student Experience. This issue will also be discussed at the Education Committee 21/10/2026, so that BCU can consider its position and ensure appropriate protections remain in place should Turnitin's terms or use of student submissions change in the future. If you have any concerns, questions, or views about BCU's use of Turnitin, please add them to the comment. I will ensure student feedback is gathered and brought forward in the relevant discussions and committee meetings.
