What makes a good idea?

Idea Appropriate (yes/no) Reason
Changes to the process for applying for the Financial Assistance Fund ✔️ Would require working with the relevant team to streamline a University process. Or could involve implementing a new process which may be a long-term project that required investment and resources
More breaks in engineering lab sessions This is a course specific idea, which would be best resolved by contacting your Course Rep, who would then add it to the Feedback Hub
Request to have a counsellor with specific remits in University’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Team (such as a Grief counsellor) ✔️ Isn’t something which BCUSU have control over, as the team is managed by the University. This idea getting 930 votes would give our Officer Team a strong argument to give to the University for extra funding for this type of role
Requesting to rearrange their individual timetable This is a student’s individual academic issue, which would be handled by BCU's Student Support Centre. Our Advice Team could support if they’re struggling with handling the issue
Calling for more social spaces on campus ✔️ This is something that would require involvement from multiple areas across the University and funding. The University may require a high student backing (+930 votes) to invest in a project like this

Kitchen and/or shop and café for Margaret Street campus

    Current
    • Support and Wellbeing
Currently, the Margaret Street campus has no kitchen or on-site food facilities - meaning that students who aren't able to prepare lunch have to buy food in town, or have to walk twenty minutes to the main campus during their lunch breaks in order to buy food using their student discounts. This is an accessibility issue for students who struggle to get off site, and also a monetary issue as getting food in town is costly which makes it hard for students to save money. Additionally, there are often social issues that unfortunately occur in the city centre which also deter students from making their way to the main campus on foot, which I have personally been told by other students. The union is kind enough to offer essential items like instant food hampers in the common room, however these go quickly as there are a large amount of students that need them. I'd like to propose either the re-establishment of the kitchen (which Margaret Street once had) or the implementation of a shop or café for food on-site or nearby. With a kitchen, this would hopefully also provide for a dedicated dining area for students, as the current common room is substantially small.
