What makes a good idea?

Idea Appropriate (yes/no) Reason
Changes to the process for applying for the Financial Assistance Fund ✔️ Would require working with the relevant team to streamline a University process. Or could involve implementing a new process which may be a long-term project that required investment and resources
More breaks in engineering lab sessions This is a course specific idea, which would be best resolved by contacting your Course Rep, who would then add it to the Feedback Hub
Request to have a counsellor with specific remits in University’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Team (such as a Grief counsellor) ✔️ Isn’t something which BCUSU have control over, as the team is managed by the University. This idea getting 930 votes would give our Officer Team a strong argument to give to the University for extra funding for this type of role
Requesting to rearrange their individual timetable This is a student’s individual academic issue, which would be handled by BCU's Student Support Centre. Our Advice Team could support if they’re struggling with handling the issue
Calling for more social spaces on campus ✔️ This is something that would require involvement from multiple areas across the University and funding. The University may require a high student backing (+930 votes) to invest in a project like this

Please plan any activities where all ethnicities are involved, not just by majority! I've heard others, including my friends felt extremely left out due to difference in culture and don't know what activities to look for. Please and thanks!

7:21pm on 30 Dec 25 This issue is a bit complex, but there's something really important I'd like to point out. I've spoken to a lot of people and there seems to be a common theme of people feeling that inclusion, while important, is going in the wrong direction. T o be precise, many things at BCU seem to prioritize specifically inclusion of southeast Asian culture. It's a little hard to navigate the wording of this, since it could easily be perceived as racist, but many of my friends feel quite excluded by this focus. For example, the amount of events focused on this culture far outclasses events focused on other cultures (to the point where there aren't very many at all, go to the group chat for the international society, scroll up, and you'll see my point). A great example of this problem was during diversity week, in which all cultures are supposed to be represented. My friends and I attended a mocktail party, hosted by the cocktail society. Throughout the entire time we were there, almost every single song played was southeast Asian. My expectation of "diversity week" would be to play songs from dozens of cultures all over the world. Another point to be made is that of representation in the student union. The student union isn't diverse enough, and in my opinion, it needs more representation of other cultures from all across the world. To reiterate, I believe that the amount of southeast Asian immigrants in Birmingham has led to the school and student union prioritizing that culture over others. While inclusivity is very important, it's gone by far beyond what is needed, to the point where many others are being left out and made to feel unwelcome. And I just want to be clear here— if this was coming from a place of hate, I would not have moved to Birmingham. This is a matter of making everyone feel welcome, an incredibly important issue which, by my accounts, the student union has not been doing especially well.
