Who We Are
Established in 2017, and redesigned in 2026, the Law & Debating Society is the premier student led organization at Birmingham City University dedicated to bridging the gap between academic legal education and the professional world. With a growing community of 300+ active members, we exist to inspire, support, and empower aspiring legal practitioners and ambitious students from all disciplines.
University is about far more than just sitting in lecture theatres! Our goal is to create an inclusive, high energy space where you can build real confidence, form lifelong friendships, and sharpen the skills that set you apart. Whether you are aiming for a career as a solicitor, preparing for the bar, or simply looking to refine your public speaking and commercial awareness, our society gives you the tools, network, and practical experience to succeed.
What We Do
We focus on delivering tangible opportunities across 5 core pillars:
Competitions & Practical Advocacy: From mooting, debating, and negotiation sessions to full scale mock trials judged by practising barristers, we help you hone your courtroom advocacy, legal research, and client interviewing techniques. We also field teams for prestigious national competitions, mentorship and coaching every step of the way.
Commercial Awareness & Market Insight: Navigating training contract interviews and legal assessments requires an understanding of how businesses operate. We host tailored sessions, market discussions, and business focused workshops to help you discuss current commercial trends with confidence.
Employability & Career Preparation: We actively support your transition from student to legal professional. Our careers programming features CV clinics, assessment centre walkthroughs, firm insight evenings, and direct access to legal recruiters knowledge.
Networking & Professional Connections: We bring the legal sector to you. Our calendar includes networking dinners, panel discussions, and insight sessions attended by trainees, solicitors, barristers, and partners from regional and national law firms.

This society is holding online elections to choose their committee for the new academic year 2026/27. Any paid member can apply for a committee position that interests them and all paid members will also be able to vote for their preferred candidates when polling opens.
