About Skating Society

Hello! We are the Birmingham City University Skate Society, an inclusive and diverse society for students who are interested or experienced in different action sports (skateboarding, roller-skating, scootering) etc. Ever growing and ever skating, we are a super relaxed community of Skaters.

We believe as a society, every student member should have the opportunity to enjoy themselves, feel included and find a like-minded group of friends, who enjoy skateboarding, roller-skating, bmx biking, scootering etc. Anyone is welcome to come to one of our meet-ups regardless of their ability. We have multiple experienced Skaters & Riders who are more than happy to help you with your skating journey, whether it is landing your first Ollie, landing a one foot glide Or learning to grind a ledge, we are all in this together and super supportive of one another!

Who we are meant for

Whether you are a beginner or have been skating for ages and love it, you will feel welcome at our sessions. Our committee members are more than happy to help you learn or give trick tips, and all of our members are inclusive and will make you feel welcome and safe.

Our ethos

We are a group of friends who love skating! The Committee's number one priority in ensuring that everyone has a friend. The Skating Society was originally set up by a group of like-minded friends with big plans! And we have carried that vision to this day. We are always open to suggestions, there is no hierarchy, and we are always having fun! We believe that for many Skating is a form of therapy or escapism, to get away from the daily pressures of life, at university this can be especially difficult, which is why we encourage everyone and anyone to join our society.

How we work

Feel free to join our WhatsApp group chat, this is is our main form of communication between members and how we set up regular skate-meets. Whilst there will be regular skate-meets for members, the WhatsApp group chat also has a secondary purpose for providing a community to like-minded students and skaters. Because of how we run things and how the community works, the WhatsApp group chat is also used for community lead skate sessions.

What We Do

We run different activities both on and off school grounds. We hold meetups on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Friday, with the being from 4-7 PM. We host a variety of socials! From trips to the pub to skate movie premieres and meals out, there will be loads on and lots of oppurtunity to meet skaters and make friends. We want to create a friendly, relaxed community and there will be no pressure to drink! We just want everyone to be comfortable and having fun.

(As a new society not everything is set in stone. And throghout the coming weeks we will have more concrete information on timings, sign ups and session plans.)

Trips

On the last Saturday of each month, we hold trips to popular indoor and outdoor skateparks in the UK. From small towns like Derby, Leicester to big cities Liverpool, Manchester and London. Our goal is to explore the many skateparks of the UK as well as see a multitude of their renowned sites. So keep you eyes peeled for our next trip if you willing to come ride with us and don't worry, transport to those places will be provided

What if I don't Skate?

As you well know, the society is dedicated to helping both students who have and have not skated before, however, this heading aims towards student who ride something else such as Rollerblades/skates, scooters,or BMX. We are open to ALL! The current society has a variety of different skaters, including Long Boarders and Roller Skaters, so do not feel that you can't join the society because you do not Skatebaord! As a society, our aim is inclusivity and fun, even if you are just looking to hang out and meet some new people we are open to all.

At our society, we believe that skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a lifestyle that connects people from all walks of life.

Rest assured, we deliver the highest quality possible, ensuring that your investment will serve you well on your skating adventures! So, are you ready to make new friends, learn some sick tricks, and be part of an inclusive community that embraces everyone? Join us at BCU Skating Society, where every grind builds a bond.
