Although BCUSU Officers appear to be well-meaning in their mission to uphold student representation, the reality is that campuses outside of Curzon are often forgotten.

Healthcare students, who are based exclusively at City South, are a distinct group of students who balance a number of academic demands outside of studying.

On top of the high academic load, we are expected to complete intensive placements and fulfil additional competences related to our chosen profession. It should also be noted that a significant percentage of healthcare students are attending BCU as mature students. This means that they commute to campus and have additional responsibilities outside of university, such as childcare.

The majority of events and student outreach (e.g., branded stalls, careers fairs) are based at Curzon and tailored to Curzon students. Simply speaking, City South students do not have the time to commute to Curzon; and what few events are held at City South appear to be done as token gestures. The recent Careers Conference (11th March 2026) is a prime example of this tokenism, as the event is geared towards sectors like marketing, finance, and consulting — there was little to no mention of healthcare career pathways.

With this is mind, we need a Health Officer who personally understands the demands of healthcare courses so that they can provide meaningful representation. This individual would be based primarily at City South and advocate for more student outreach, work closely with HELS Lead Reps and Course Reps, and personally engage with healthcare students.
