This stripe is awarded to groups who have taken active steps to make a positive impact in the community either at a local, national or international level. Groups may have engaged with local community groups or helped promote BCU students as valued members of the community.

Community Stripe: Criteria

Get a member of the Careers & Employment Team to deliver a bespoke employability session for your group. Evidence of event i.e. poster or an email from member of staff who delivered it. Get your group to attend one of the Careers & Employment Team's events, workshops or fairs. All group leaders to have completed BCUSU Student Group Leader Online Training.* Provide names & student i.d. numbers of all committee members who have completed it. Ask a member of Development & Opportunities Staff to send you the link for online training if you haven’t completed it. Online training will prepare you fully for your role as a committee member, please ensure you do this as it is compulsory for all leaders to do!!
Sent members on professional development courses. Send evidence of event and attendance confirmation including any certificates awarded. Contact national organisations linked to your group for information on workshops they run – you may be lucky sometimes they are FREE!! Professional development is a key way for potential employers to see that you are passionate about improving your skills.
Attend BCUSU Leadership training events i.e. masterclasses Show record of attendance i.e. confirmation of booking or any certificates awarded To find out what’s on offer contact a member of the Development & Opportunities staff team. Master classes are great for improving your skills in specific area’s such as event planning, social media training, communication/public speaking. These sessions also count towards your Stand Out award.
Create a mentoring/buddy scheme that supports your first year members. Provide details of the scheme and participant testimonials Ask Development & Opportunities for advice on how to do this. Providing a space that supports your members demonstrates that your group is serious about providing the best opportunities for students at BCU.

Hold events with guest speakers from sector leading organisation. Email from speaker confirming attendance and event publicity. Always remember to submit an external speaker form 20 working days before you event as a minimum to ensure speakers are able to present on campus. Guest speakers can offer real insight into the sector or area of work your members are passionate about, the students union can offer financial support to get external speakers on campus.
