The Constitution

The Constitution is the set of rules that govern the Union, which everyone involved with the organisation must follow.

  • It is divided into three sections. Click on the links below to read the documents in each section.
  •

Founding Documents

These two documents outline the basic structures of the Union and its most important rules, which the Union is legally obliged to follow under charity law.

Bylaws

These go into more depth about specific aspects of the Union.

Policies

These commit the Union to specific actions, such as support for a campaign, changes to a bylaw or the refurbishment of a bar. There are a lot of policies, so they are organised into seven different categories:

All policies expire, or 'lapse', after a certain amount of time (3 years if passed at a meeting of Student Council, and 5 years if passed at an Annual General Meeting). Click here to see when current policies are due to lapse.

Please email the Union's Campus Engagement Officer (union.engagement@bcu.ac.uk) if you require any further information about the constitution and the other rules governing the Union.
