Architecture sans Frontières-UK (ASF-UK) invites you to the Change_by_Design, Kenya Workshop 2011!!!
Rapid urbanization, growing inequalities and increasing demand for land are posing critical challenges for cities in the global south. The pursuit of social justice and environmental sustainability in this context is demanding built environment practitioners to shift their roles of providers of ‘solutions’ to one of enablers of change. New skills are needed to engage communities in the transformation of their built environment and generate responsive interventions.
This workshop aims to engage participants from a variety of backgrounds in a hands-on participatory design process which recognizes residents as active agents of change rather than passive recipients. The workshop will take place in the settlement of Mathare in Nairobi, Kenya where Pamoja Trust, a local organization, has been engaged in mapping and designing strategies for slum upgrading. Participants will work closely with residents, Pamoja Trust and local professionals in the exploration of tools to collaboratively design environments and strategies that are responsive to the needs and aspirations of the community. The workshop will incorporate different scales, including the design of home environments, community spaces, infrastructure and policy strategies.
Participants will also take part in lectures and discussions about Nairobi’s current political, social, economic and environmental challenges, led by practitioners and organizations working locally. As outcome, the workshop aims to generate a preliminary design brief that informs slum upgrading in Mathare and to refine participatory methodologies to be implemented by Pamoja Trust.
The workshop will be run in partnership with Pamoja Trust http://www.pamojatrust. org/ and will be coordinated by:
Matthew French - Shelter and Housing Policy Branch, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN HABITAT), Nairobi, Kenya
