Join this event hosted by Oluwadamilola Iyanda, BCUSU Vice President Welfare, for Women's History Month.

On the theme of women educating & inspiring each other, BCUSU are hosting external guest speakers. Book your free space and be inspired by women in leadership or entrepreneurial positions, some who have succeeded in male-dominated industries.

Anita’s memoir traces her journey from arriving in 1960s Birmingham as a young girl from Kenya, to becoming one of the first Asian presenters on British television, leading the creation of the BBC’s Asian Network, and shaping civic and cultural life across the West Midlands. Her story is one of courage, conviction and leadership.

This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from a leader whose work has transformed broadcasting, education and the arts, and whose story continues to inspire and a chance to network with influential persons from across Birmingham.

The evening will include:

A live Q&A with BBC News Presenter, Reeta Chakrabarti
Readings from the memoir
Live music performances
A book signing with Anita

All proceeds from the book will be used to support BCU’s Financial Assistance Fund for students.

This year we're hosting the ceremony at The Bond in Digbeth - just 15 minutes from City Centre Campus.

During the evening we'll celebrate the amazing work our student leaders have done to amplify the voice of students at BCU and make your university experience one to remember.

6pm - Meet at BCU Curzon Building, City Centre Campus. Gather for opening address from VP Welfare (including safety briefing and introduction)
6:30pm - Start Reclaim the Night march (Route: TBD)
7pm - Rally at Victoria Square

Liberation Councils are your chance to join Liberation Society leaders to chat to your VP Welfare and the Activities and Representation Team about Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Come along if you're interested in helping shape how the University and Union develop policy and react to EDI and welfare issues and create equitable change.

You can join us in-person or on Teams, just make sure you sign up by grabbing a ticket!

What is discussed at a Liberation Council?

The health, welfare, and wellbeing of students
International student's experience at BCU and available support
Environmental sustainability at BCU and BCUSU
Diversity and inclusion work from BCU and BCUSU - including projects, initiatives, and policies around protected characteristics, faith, and beliefs
Discuss updates to University and external policies that will impact the student body
Recieve updates from Liberation Societies - celebrating wins and troubleshooting barriers
Recieve updates from VP Welfare on their manifesto aims and EDI related projects
Engage in campaigns related to welfare, inclusion, and sustainable development. This includes campaigns on accommodation, finance and money management, LGBTQ+ issues, equality issues, international student experience, tackling racism and xenophobia, sexual health, sustainability campaigns, and ethical issues.
