Once you have had your project approved and funding has been agreed, you need to register with the Students' Union. Below is all the information you need to become a Student Academic Partner. If you have any questions please contact Paul Chapman.

'Are you studying on a Visa?'Eligibility to work in the U.K

In order for you to get paid you will need to register on the Students' Union's payroll system. To do this you must be eligible to work in the U.K. If you are not from the U.K you will need to check your visa and tell us about any limitations on your ability to work whilst you study.
For more information on working alongside your studies click here.

It is your responsibility to check your working ability alongisde your visa and not breach any conditions placed upon your studies in the UK.

We will need to take a copy of your passport / driving licence for all students and visa for Non UK students, in line with the Immigration Act.

You will also need a U.K. bank account and a National Insurance Number. For more details on National Insurance Numbers please click here.

Registration

You will also need to complete a 'New Starter Form' which you can download here.  We will not be able to pay you until this form is completed. Make sure you complete you bank account details carefully, otherwise we might end up paying someone else!
You will also need to provide a P45 from your last place of work. The government uses this to work out how much tax you will pay for the year. If you don’t have a P45 or are unsure, complete a P46 form. You can print a P46 form here; unfortunately you can only use hard copy versions of this form.

You will also need to provide a copy of your passport and if you are a non UK student, your visa.

When you have completed all your forms and obtained all your documents, you can either email / scan them to Paul Chapman or put them in an envelope and hand them into any Student Union reception marked:

'FAO Paul Chapman, Membership Engagement Manager, Students' Union, City North'

If you wish to post your forms to us please send them to:

Please DO NOT send your original passport / driving licence through the post. If you wish to arrange a meeting with Paul to pick up your forms please email him with times and locations you are on campus.

Getting paid

In order to get paid we ask you to fill in a timesheet each week. It is better for you if you submit weekly timesheets as you are likely to be taxed at a higher rate if you store up hours to be paid in one lump sum. Timesheets can be downloaded from here. It is easiest to complete this electronically and then email it on to your Staff Partner who will authorise the hours and email the completed timesheet to Kelly Bartlett at the Students’ Union.

Payments are processed weekly. Timesheets that are submitted by 5pm on Monday will be paid on the Friday of that week. Any later and your payment may not be processed until the following week.

All payments are subject to tax and National Insurance contributions.

How much National Insurance you pay

The amount and type of National Insurance contributions you pay depend on whether you're employed or self-employed and how much you earn. The rates shown below are for the 2011-12 tax year.

If you're employed

If you're employed you pay Class 1 National Insurance contributions.

The rates are:

If you earn more than £139 a week and up to £817 a week, you pay 12 per cent of the amount you earn between £139 and £817

If you earn more than £817 a week, you also pay 2 per cent of all your earnings over £817
