Calls are open for SAP Projects for 2011 – 12

Winner of the Times Higher Education Award in 2010 for ‘Outstanding Support for Students’

Entering its 3rd year, the Student Academic Partners Scheme has supported over 150 projects and employed over 200 students in developing new ways of working together with staff to enhance the learning experience at Birmingham City University.

A joint initiative, run by CELT in partnership with the Students’ Union, the SAPS Scheme offers funding for up to 100 hours for students to be employed at £10 per hour. The remit of these projects is simple; investigate and deliver projects that can improve the experience of students and enhance learning and teaching.

The SAP scheme has attracted national interest from a wide range of organisations including the Higher Education Academy, the National Union of Students, the Quality Assurance Agency and the Association of Registrars’ Council as well as other UK Universities and further afield with our partners in the USA, Northwest Missouri State University.

Previous projects have ranged from designing a new piece of classroom resource, utilising teaching resources that have lain dormant for a time or setting up a specific forum for capturing the student voice.

These projects are supported by a few key principles:

• A sense of true partnership between staff and students, rather than student employed as assistants
• A willingness to share, disseminate and pass on to a wider audience away from your main faculty
• An eagerness to be part of a cohort sharing experiences and findings to influence the wider University through up to four sessions in the year

Your bid should demonstrate one or more of the following:

• Evidence from the application form that thought has been given to the timeline of the project
• A clear impact on the student and learning experience, primarily aligning with the learning and teaching strategy
• A ability to support the issues of retention, progression and achievement of our students through stimulating student engagement in ass aspects of academic programmes

Should we receive bids that show students working from across faculties and different disciplines, these will be favourably considered.

The deadline is the 14th of October 2011 and decisions will be made by a selection panel drawn up from the University and Students’ Union.

Decisions will be made available in the week beginning 24th October 2011.

Successful projects will be required to attend a briefing and induction session in the week beginning 31st October 2011
