Welcome to University life in the UK! As an International student at Birmingham City University you are automatically a member of Birmingham City Students’ Union.
International Orientation Week 12-16 Sept
As International students you arrive before the academic term starts so you can take part in International Orientation Week. Orientation Week is a great chance to make friends, learn more about the Students' Union and get to know your way around the University and the city of Birmingham! Freshers Week 17-26 Sept
A ‘Fresher’ is a new first year student. The Students' Union welcomes ALL new students (Freshers) with the celebration of Freshers week; a fun-filled programme of day time and night time events to make your Uni experience as enjoyable as possible.
Freshers'11 is the perfect opportunity to make lots of new friends, get involved with our events and sign up to groups and societies. Don't miss the Freshers Fair on Wednesday 21 September at the Doug Ellis Sports Centre.
Advice on Student identity cards
When going to night time events avoid carrying your passport around with you in case you lose it; instead take a photographic identity card or driving licence if possible, to prove your age for night time events. If your passport is your only option take extra care.
Advice on Carrying money
Do not carry all your money with you. Carrying too much cash on you could result in getting your money lost or stolen. To give you an idea of the costs of a student night; event entry will normally cost you £5-£10, for one drink you can expect to pay £2-£3, taxi fare £5-£8 based on the area of Birmingham you live in, or you can use FREE Union coaches to some of our events. For one night time event you should not need to carry more that £40.
NUS Extra Discount Card
During the Orientation Week make sure you visit the Union Reception in the Union Building at City North campus to purchase your NUS Extra Student Discount card. Your NUS Extra card provides you with discounts from over 70 brands in the UK and if you upgrate it to an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) you'll be able to take advantage of discounts in 120 countries.
